Frequently Asked Questions

We can incorporate a variety of Roller Doors to meet your requirements. There are a range of colours available as well as manual, chain or electrically driven options.

  • How quickly can you start?
We can usually begin your project 4 weeks after your deposit has been paid. Call us to discuss your specific requirements.
  • How do you deliver all the materials?
Your materials will usually arrive on a large truck (an "artic wagon") that has a forklift on the back to unload everything. We can't always guarantee that the driver will be able to unload the materials for you, but you can ask for this service. Keep in mind that requesting unloading might mean your delivery takes a little longer. If the truck can't park near your property to unload, we'll use a smaller truck instead (this might cost extra). In that case, you'll be responsible for unloading the materials yourself. Large doors (roller doors) and smaller personal doors will be delivered separately.
  • Are instructions provided for self build projects?
Yes, you'll get full instructions for building it yourself. We'll email you a pack that includes: Step-by-step instructions A list of all the parts you'll need (this is important to keep handy) Drawings showing how all the parts connect together Drawings of the frame itself The parts list will tell you what each piece is, based on its length, a description, and the illustration drawings. And if you get stuck, we're happy to help by email or phone.
  • Do I need planning permission for my new steel building?
Thinking about putting up a steel building and wondering about planning permission? Here's a simplified guide: How to find out if you need permission: Get drawings: Artisan Steel Buildings will give you the necessary building plans. Mark your spot: On a map of your property (a "site plan"), mark where you want the building to go. Ask the experts: Take the building plans and your site plan to your local planning office. They'll tell you if you need permission. You can also often find a "Do I need planning permission?" form on their website. Always check first: It's best to talk to your local planning office before you start any building project. Temporary Steel Buildings: Planning rules for temporary buildings are tricky. Generally, you need permission for any building used for more than 28 days. You definitely need permission if the building is within 5 meters of your property line, or if it makes parking or turning difficult. Sometimes, you can get temporary planning permission for longer periods, so it's worth asking your local planning officer. Permitted Development: Some small projects don't need planning permission because they fall under "Permitted Development Rights." These rules can change depending on where you live, but the maximum height is often around 4 meters. Always check with your local planning office or their website for the latest rules. Pre-application: You can often submit a "pre-application" to your local planning office. This lets you get feedback on your plans before you submit a full application. They'll usually tell you within 2-3 weeks if your project is likely to be approved, and they can point out any potential problems. Planning Permission Times: It usually takes 8-12 weeks to get planning permission, but it can take much longer if there are complications. Making an Application: While you can hire an architect or engineer to handle the planning process, you can also apply online yourself at www.planningportal.gov.uk. General Rules: New commercial buildings over 4 meters tall usually need planning permission. Expect to wait 8-12 weeks (or longer) for a decision. Need More Info?
